Use this free paintbrush crochet pattern to crochet a fun amigurumi for art lovers.

This free paintbrush crochet pattern is a super quick and easy make. It’s a fun novelty crocheted amigurumi, great for creative kids (and adults! why not?) and for craft fairs if you’re looking for extra inventory.

The pattern is available for free below, or if you’d like the PDF crochet pattern you can download this for free by signing up to the Crochet Crew. Simply complete the form below and you’ll receive an email with a button to click so you can download the pattern.

To give you a wee warning, the PDF is an old version and as such it isn’t written in the same standard as my most recent crochet patterns (post November 2021). This simply means the pattern is correct, but the pattern doesn’t look as nice and the photos aren’t as professional. But it will still give you what you need to make this crocheted paintbrush.

If you do decide to crochet Pablo the Paintbrush, I would absolutely love to see your makes. You can share photos with me on Instagram and Facebook @cillacrochets or on Ravelry by uploading a project (and photo) and linking to the pattern here.

I hope you enjoy this free paintbrush crochet pattern, and if you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me by email here.

Pablo the Paintbrush Crochet Pattern Information

Materials needed

Here are the materials you’ll need to crochet Pablo the Paintbrush:

  • Yarn: Aran / Worsted Weight yarn in the following colours:
    • Orange (Yarn A)
    • Off White (Yarn B)
    • Clay (Yarn C)
    • Emerald Green (Yarn D)
  • Crochet hook: You will need a 3.5mm crochet hook. If you choose to use a different yarn weight, I recommend using a smaller crochet hook than what your yarn label recommends. This will ensure the stuffing won’t show through your stitches.
  • Other materials:
    • Scissors
    • Tapestry needle
    • Stitch marker
    • Black embroidery thread
    • Stuffing
    • Optional: 8mm safety eyes, if you would prefer not to embroider the eyes.

Stitch explanations

  • Increase (Inc): Work 2 stitches into the same stitch.
  • Decrease (Dec): Work one crochet stitch to merge two stitches together. I use the invisible decrease technique throughout this pattern, however it isn’t required. Use whichever method works best for you.,

Gauge

Checking your gauge is not required in this pattern. To ensure your stuffing doesn’t show through the stitches, use a hook that is smaller than the recommended size for your yarn weight.

Counting

Please use a stitch marker throughout to keep count of your stitches. I always use one in the first stitch of each row.

Special Pattern Notes

  • Changing colours: When changing yarn colours for one stitch in a row, add the new colour to close the single crochet before,. `Then add the previous colour to close the next single crochet stitch. This will ensure a neat colour change appears.
  • Embroidered eyes can be substituted for safety eyes.
  • All increases and decreases are worked in single crochet.
  • Stuff as you go.

Paintbrush Face Embroidery

Mouth

Use tapestry needle and black embroidery thread.

Positioning:

  • Point 1 & 2 between R35 & R36.
  • Point 3 between R33 & R34.
  • Point 4 & 5 between R34 & R35.

Embroidery instructions:

  • Insert yarn into point 1.
  • Take yarn through to point 2.
  • Go over and into point 1, so there is one line of embroidery thread between point 1 and 2.
  • Bring your needle back up through point 3.
  • Take your needle over and under the middle of the embroidery thread between point 1 & 2.
  • Put your needle back into point 3 and bring your needle back up through point 4 and pull tight. You should now see a triangle shape appear for the mouth.
  • Take your needle over and under the thread between point 2 & 3, and insert your hook back into point 4. Bring your needle up to point 5 and pull tight.
  • Take your needle over and under the thread between point 1 & 3, and insert your hook back into point 5. Bring needle up through any of the other 4 points and pull tight. Then hide your embroidery tails in the paintbrush handle.

Eyes

Only applicable if you haven’t used safety eyes.

Positioning:

  • Central part of each eye should be between R38 & R39.
  • Eyes should be 4 stitches apart, e.g. two single crochet stitch gaps between the eyes

Embroidery instructions:

  • Use a sewing needle and black embroidery thread.
  • Refer to Image A:
    • Embroider horizontally across with no gaps. Your longest stitch should be the middle between the single crochet stitch gaps.
  • Refer to Image B:
    • Embroider vertically over your horizontal stitches to shape your eyes.
