Use this free crochet pattern to make a superhero costume for your chosen plushie or doll.

Originally, this toy superhero costume crochet pattern was designed for Milo the Monkey, however when writing up the PDF crochet pattern I thought it would be great to make it work for any amigurumi, doll, or soft toy. So, now it can be made for any plushie of your choice!

While there is some measuring and calculations involved in this pattern to make it fit on different toys, the superhero cape and headband has been designed to be easy and quick to make but still does require a little more concentration than a regular crochet pattern. Of course, if you have any questions at all while you work through this pattern, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at any stage.

Without further ado, let’s start crocheting some toy superhero costumes!

Crochet Top Tips & Additional Pattern Information

  • Pattern level: This pattern is an easy level crochet pattern.
  • How this pattern works: This pattern has been made to be flexible in size. This means you will need the soft toy, amigurumi, or doll that you want to make the superhero cape and headband for as you’ll need to take some measurements before you start.
  • Measurement taking: You are required to take measurements and complete some calculations in this pattern. The calculations however are explained in detail with examples, to make it as simple as possible.
  • Approximate measurements: When crocheting, while your measurements may be precise, please be relaxed when crocheting. It’s much better for your crochet to slightly bigger/longer than the calculated size rather than smaller/shorter to ensure the cape and headband fit properly.
  • Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
  • Working in rows: This pattern is primary worked flat by crocheting back and forth in rows, or by crocheting around a chain.
  • Stitch marker: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round/row to keep track of the number of stitches.
  • Copyright: You are more than welcome to sell your crocheted creations using this pattern on a small scale. However, the pattern itself cannot be reproduced, sold, or redistributed in any way without the designers’ consent. Toy Superhero Costume Crochet Pattern

Taking Measurements

Before starting this crochet pattern you will need to take some measurements in order to make the Superhero cape and headband fit your chosen soft toy or doll. I’ve chosen to create the cape for one of my amigurumi, Milo the Monkey, so you will see this amigurumi pictured throughout the photos in this pattern.

MEASUREMENTS NEEDED FOR CAPE

The measurements you need to take for the cape are:

  • Back width
  • Back height

Example:

  • Milo the Monkey’s back width is 7.5 cm / 3 “
  • Milo the Monkey’s back height is 10 cm / 4 “

MEASUREMENTS NEEDED FOR HEADBAND

The measurements you need to take for the headband are:

  • Circumference of the head

Example:

  • Milo the Monkey’s head circumference is 23 cm / 9 “

Superhero Cape

Before crocheting the cape, you need to work out the size of the cape needed (the length and width). To do this use the measurements you found by following the taking measurement instructions above and complete the following calculations:

[Back length] x 1.5 = Cape length

Example for Milo the Monkey:

10 cm x 1.5 = 15 cm

or

4 “ x 1.5 = 6 “

[Back width] x 1.25 = Cape width

Example for Milo the Monkey:

7.5 cm x 1.25 = 9.38 cm

or

3 “ x 1.25 = 3.75 “

Now that we know the measurements needed, we can start crocheting.

Using Yarn Colour A.

Start: Ch until you reach the ‘Cape Length’ required – include the loop on your hook when measuring.

R1: In second ch from hook sc across, ch 1, turn

R2: sc across, ch 1, turn

Repeat R2 until the measurement of all rows approximately matches the ‘Cape width’. Keep note of the number of rows you crochet.

Do not cut yarn or fasten off. Now we’ll create the holes for the yarn to go through by turning to crochet along the closest cape width.

To do this, complete the following equation:

[# of rows] / 3 = # of st markers you need

Please note: if you get a decimal number, round up or down to the nearest whole number.

Example for Milo the Monkey:

21 rows / 3 = 7 st markers needed

Use the number of st markers and evenly spread them out along the closest cape width to your crochet hook as shown in the image below.

To create the holes where the cape ribbon/string will go, ch 1 more than the number of rows between where your hook is and the next st marker, then sl st into the st marker space.

For example, there are 2 rows between my crochet hook and where my next st marker is for Milo the Monkey, so I ch 3 and sl st into the st marker space as shown in the image below.

Repeat this st combination until you reach the last st marker.

To finish, ch 1 more than the number of rows between your crochet hook and then sc into the next st on the closest long side of the cape.

Continue to sc around the three remaining edges of the cape until you’re back where you started. In each corner, 2 sc into the one corner st. When you reach where you started, sl st into the first ch, cut yarn and fasten off.

Use a tapestry needle to sew in all yarn ends to hide.

Cut a piece of yarn that’s approximately two to three times the width of your cape. Using a tapestry needle (or your fingers) weave the yarn tail through each of the holes you created at the top of the cape. See image below.

As an alternative to yarn, you could use a ribbon (this is completely optional).

Now your toy superhero cape is complete and can be worn by your chosen soft toy/doll/amigurumi.

Headband

Before crocheting the headband, you need to work out the length of ch to start with. To do this use the measurements you found by following the taking measurement instructions above and complete the following calculations:

[Head circumference] / 3 = Ch length

Example for Milo the Monkey:

(23 cm / 2 = 11.5 cm)

or

(9 “ / 2 = 4.5 “)

Now that we know the measurements needed, we can start crocheting.

Using Yarn Colour B.

Start: Ch until you reach the approximate ‘Ch length’ required – include the loop on your hook when measuring

R1: Start in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each st along ch. *At the end of the ch, ch 3 and turn to crochet along the other side of the ch.** 1 sc in each st along other side of ch. Repeat from * to ** then sl st in first sc in round to join.

Cut yarn and fasten off. Use tapestry needle to weave in yarn ends.

*Attach yarn to yarn space on one end (see image below) and crochet another ch that measures the ‘ch length’ calculated.

Start in second ch from hook and sl st in each st back along the ch.

Sl st in ch space where you attached the yarn.

Cut yarn and fasten off. Weave in yarn ends using tapestry needle.**

Repeat from * to ** in the ch space at the other end of the headband.

See completed headband in image below.

Assembling your amigurumi superhero costumes

To assemble your costumes, simply weave a yarn strand in and out of the holes at the top of each cape. This is how you’ll tie the capes to your amigurumi.

To attach the headband, simply tie the headband straps at the back of the amigurumi’s head to secure.
