Crochet this Tender Tomato amigurumi with the free crochet pattern!
As you know, I’m a huge fan of designing fun, quick, and easy amigurumi fruit. Now, this may be controversial for some, but I grew up being taught the tomato is a fruit. However, so far my limited online research has taught me that botanically tomatoes are indeed fruits, but the culinary classification would consider tomatoes vegetables (you can read more about the classification of tomatoes here if you fancy it…).
Long story short, whether you think tomatoes are fruits or veggies, I don’t think it matters. But either way, if you’d like to crochet a tomato, you’re in the right place!
I also have to admit that I absolutely love tomato in all its forms! Whether raw tomato in salads or on crackers with some good ol’ cheese, cooked tomatoes in fresh Italian pasta or in chunks for a cooked breakfast, or tomatoes totally squished to bits in a tomato sauce or ketchup (really, I’d put tomato sauce aka ketchup on almost everything if it was socially acceptable…but I don’t… don’t worry…). Anyway, enough of all the tomato chat (I’m a little too obsessed!).

Tender Tomato Amigurumi Crochet Pattern Information
Materials needed
Below you’ll find a list of materials needed to crochet the Tender Tomato amigurumi.
- Worsted weight yarn in the following colours. For reference, I used Rico Design Creative Cotton Aran (amounts used are in brackets):
- Colour A – Red (13 grams = 22.1 m / 24.2 yds)
- Colour B – Green (1 gram = 1.7 m / 2 yds)
- Crochet hook size 3.5 mm / E
- Stuffing
- Needle
- Scissors
- Pins
- Stitch marker
Tomato Amigurumi Size
Using the same yarn mentioned above with a 3.5 mm (E) hook, the Tender Tomato amigurumi turned out to be 7 cm / 2.75 ” high (from the base to the top of the middle stem) and 6 cm / 2.36 ” wide.
Gauge
Gauge is not required for this pattern, however for reference my gauge was as follows:
11 sc stitches on 5 cm / 1.96 “
11 rows on 5 cm / 1.96 “
Crochet pattern abbreviations
This tomato amigurumi pattern is written in US terms. Abbreviations used are listed below.
R# – Row/round number
st – Stitch
ch – Chain
sl st – Slip stitch
mc – Magic circle
sc – Single crochet
inc – Increase
dec – Decrease
[…] x … – Repeat the sequence of stitches in brackets x-times
(…) – Total number of stitches at the end of each row/round
Top tips and additional crochet pattern information
- Pattern level: Easy
- Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
- Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label. This will stop the stuffing appearing through your stitches.
- Working in rounds: All parts within this pattern are worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated.
- Stitch marker: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round to keep track of the number of stitches in each round.
- Stuffing: Unless otherwise stated, stuff all amigurumi parts firmly as you crochet.
- Decreases: I recommend using invisible decreases throughout.
- Shaping: A sewing technique is used to shape the amigurumi tomato so it stays in place. Instructions are included within the pattern below.

Tender Tomato Amigurumi Crochet Pattern
Tomato
This piece is worked from the top to the bottom.
Use Yarn Colour A (Red).
R1: mc with 6 sc (6)
R2: [inc, sc] x 3 (9)
R3: [inc, 2 sc] x 3 (12)
R4: [inc, sc] x 6 (18)
R5: [2 sc, inc] x 6 (24)
R6: 2 sc, [inc, 3 sc] x 5, inc, 1 sc (30)
R7: [inc, 4 sc] x 6 (36)
R8: 2 sc, [inc, 5 sc] x 5, inc, 3 sc (42)
R9 – R15: sc around (48) – 7 rounds
R16: [dec, 5 sc] x 6 (36)
R17: 4 sc, [dec, 4 sc] x 5, dec (30)
R18: [3 sc, dec] x 6 (24)
Push your starting rows down so the first three rounds curve inwards as shown in image 1 & 2 below. Stuff as firmly as you can, but don’t worry if it the point at the top puffs out a little bit as we will be sewing the shape into place.
R19: sc, [dec, 2 sc] x 5, dec, sc (18)
R20: [dec, sc] x 6 (12)
Finish stuffing
R21: [dec] x 6 (6)
Cut yarn leaving a yarn tail of approximately 60 cm / 24” and fasten off.
Using a tapestry needle, weave the yarn tail through FLO of the final 6 sts and pull tight to close the gap.
Now we’re going to shape the tomato amigurumi so the top always stays inwards and can’t pop back out.
*Insert needle and yarn tail into a st between R20 & R21 at the bottom of the tomato.
Squeeze the bottom and top of the tomato amigurumi together and pull your needle and yarn tail up through any st between R1 & R2 of the tomato. See image 3.
Insert needle back into the tomato between R1 & R2 (see image 4). Bring your needle back out through any st between R20 & R21.
Pull yarn tail tight so the top of the tomato amigurumi curves inwards.**
Repeat from * to ** going through any sts on the opposite sides to the sts you just made.
Please note: This technique may make the bottom of your tomato amigurumi pucker slightly, but that makes it even more realistic. I hope you like it!
With your yarn tail back through the bottom of the tomato, double knot the yarn tail then thread it onto your needle again. Weave the needle into a nearby st and pull through any other st on the outside of the tomato.
Cut yarn tail to hide.

Stem & Leaves
Use Yarn Colour B (Green).
Do not stuff.
Start: ch 6
R1: Start in 2nd ch from hook and sc in next 5 sts (5)
The section you just crocheted is the stem. In R2-R4 we are going to crochet 4 leaves that sit around the bottom of the stem. The leaves will look quite similar to the stem, however the stem is a little thicker.
R2: ch 8, turn to crochet along other side of ch, start in 3rd ch from hook and sl st in next 6 sts, sl st to the starting ch just under last sc in R1 (15) – See image 6
R3: ch 8, turn to crochet along other side of ch, start in 3rd ch from hook and sl st in next 6 sts, sl st to the other side of 1st starting ch (15) – See image 7
R4: ch 8, turn to crochet along other side of ch, start in 3rd ch from hook and sl st in next 6 sts, sl st in the wrong side of 1st starting ch (15) – See image 8
R5: ch 8, turn to crochet along other side of ch, start in 3rd ch from hook and sl st in next 6 sts, sl st to the first ch of R2 (15)
Cut yarn leaving a longer yarn tail for sewing and fasten off. See completed Stem & Leaves in images 9 & 10.
Assembly
Follow the steps below to assemble your Tender Tomato amigurumi. See photos below of my tomato amigurumi so you can compare these images to the assembly steps below.
Step 1: Sew stem and leaves to tomato
Use a tapestry needle and thread it with the long yarn tail end of the stem & leaves. Sew the bottom of the stem to between R1 & R2 of the tomato. Do this by sewing the first ch of each leaf to the tomato amigurumi.
Step 2: Sew in starting yarn tail
Sew in the short yarn tail (the starting yarn tail) of the stem & leaves into the tomato to hide.
