Top Tips & Additional Information

  • Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
  • Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label. This will stop the stuffing appearing through your stitches.
  • Working in rows: This pattern is crocheted back and forth in rows unless otherwise stated.
  • Stitch marker: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round to keep track of the number of stitches.
  • Construction: This decoration is made by crocheting two flat pieces. These two pieces are then joined together by crocheting around the sides. The decoration is stuffed as you join the pieces together. This is all explained as you move throughout the pattern.
  • Copyright: You may not copy, reproduce or sell this pattern. However, I’m more than happy for you to sell the makes you’ve created using this pattern on a small scale. For more information, please read the full copyright notice at the bottom of this page.

Let’s Start Crocheting the Mitten Decoration

Mitten (Make 2)

Using Colour A Yarn (White).

This piece is worked flat by crocheting back and forth in rows. We start from the bottom of the mittens and work our way up.

Please note: Turning chs are not counted in the total stitch count.

Start: Ch 15

R1: Start in 2nd ch from hook, 14 sc, ch 1, turn (14)

R2 – 4: 14 sc, ch 1, turn (14) – 3 rows

R5: 14 sc (14)

Cut yarn, fasten off, and turn. Skip 1 st and attach Colour B Yarn (Blue) to next st as shown in image below.

R6: 12 sc, sk last white st, ch 1, turn (12)

Continue only crocheting into Colour B Yarn (Blue) sts.

R7 – 12: 12 sc, ch 1, turn (12) – 6 rows

In the next row we only crochet into 9 of the blue sts and leave the remaining 3 sts unworked.

R13 – 16: 9 sc, ch 1, turn (9) 4 rows

R17: dec, 7 sc, ch 1, turn (8)

R18: dec, 4 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (6)

R19: dec, 2 sc, dec (4)

Cut yarn and fasten off.

Attach Colour B Yarn (Blue) to the st in R12 that sits right next to R13 as shown in the image below.

R13: 2 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (4)

R14: 4 sc, ch 1, turn (4)

R15: [dec] x 2 (2)

Cut yarn and fasten off.

Repeat all steps to make a second mitten.

Weave in all yarn ends.

See completed mittens in image below.

Mitten Christmas Ornament Assembly

Hold the two mittens so they are facing each other and all sides are lined up.

Now we’re going to crochet around all sides of both mittens to join them together. St count doesn’t matter here, however st counts can be found in the diagram in the image below.

Insert crochet hook into the first st on the right side corner of the bottom of the mitten (see image below) and attach Colour C Yarn (Gold). Ensure your hook is going through a st on both mittens.

3 sc in the first st (see diagram) and continue to sc around sides of mittens to join them together. Use 3 sc in the corner sts. Stuff mitten once you reach half way around, and continue to stuff until you reach the end.

*When you reach one st away from your starting place (see end point in diagram), 1 sc, ch 20, sc in same st, sl st to 1st st where you started with Colour C Yarn (Gold).

Please note: The loop of the hanging decoration can be made longer or shorter by adding or removing ch sts. Check you are happy with the length of the loop before cutting your yarn.

Cut yarn leaving a yarn tail of approximately 10cm/4″ for sewing.

Sew yarn tail through bottom sts (first & last) of loop to secure. Sew in all yarn tails into the mitten to hide.

Congratulations, you’ve finished!
