This free love heart ornament crochet pattern has been designed for your Christmas tree.

This is the second of twelve crochet patterns to be released to kick-off the Crochet Crew’s Countdown to Christmas. You can stay in the loop with all twelve Christmas ornament crochet patterns by following along with the fun here.

This crochet pattern is an even quicker make than the Christmas Tree Ornament, and only uses two yarn colours (you could even get away with using just one!). It’s also an easy crochet pattern that requires minimal sewing (my favourite!), except for weaving in yarn ends.

Crochet Pattern Information

Materials needed to make the Love Heart Decoration

  • DK yarn. I used Rico Ricorumi DK (Colour A) and Rico Ricorumi Lamé DK (Colour B) in the following colours. Amounts are in brackets. Please note: If preferred, you can use the same yarn (e.g. Ricorumi DK) for both yarn colours. Rico Ricorumi Lamé DK is not mandatory for this project.
    • A – Berry (7 grams = 16.2 m/ 17.7 yds)
    • B – Gold (1 grams = 5 m/ 5.5 yds)
  • Crochet hook size 2.5 mm / C in US

Love Heart Christmas Ornament Size

The Love Heart Christmas Ornament once assembled is approximately 7.5 cm/3″ high by 6.5cm/2.5″ wide (at the widest point of the heart). However, the size of your make will vary depending on your hook size, the yarn you use, and your tension/gauge.

Gauge is not required for this pattern, however for reference my gauge was:

7 sc stitches on 2.5 cm / 1 “

7 rows on 2.5 cm / 1 “

Crochet Pattern Abbreviations

R# – Row/round number

Top Tips & Additional Information

  • Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
  • Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label. This will stop the stuffing appearing through your stitches.
  • Working in rows: This pattern is crocheted back and forth in rows unless otherwise stated.
  • Stitch marker: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round to keep track of the number of stitches.
  • Construction: This decoration is made by crocheting two flat pieces. These two pieces are then joined together by crocheting around the sides. The decoration is stuffed as you join the pieces together. This is all explained as you move throughout the pattern.
  • Copyright: You may not copy, reproduce or sell this pattern. However, I’m more than happy for you to sell the makes you’ve created using this pattern on a small scale. For more information, please read the full copyright notice at the bottom of this page.

Let’s Start Crocheting the Love Heart

Heart (Make 2)

Using Colour A Yarn (Berry).

This piece is worked flat by crocheting back and forth in rows. We start from the point of the heart (at the bottom) and work our way up to the rounded semi circles of the heart.

Please note: Turning chs are not counted in the total stitch count.

Start: Ch 2

R1: Start in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc, ch 1, turn (1)

R2: inc, ch 1, turn (2)

R3: [inc] x 2, ch 1, turn (4)

R4: inc, 2 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (6)

R5: inc, 4 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (8)

R6: sc across, ch 1, turn (8)

R7: inc, 6 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (10)

R8: sc across, ch 1, turn (10)

R9: inc, 8 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (12)

R10: sc across, ch 1, turn (12)

R11: inc, 10 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (14)

R12: sc across, ch 1, turn (14)

R13: inc, 12 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (16)

R14 – 15: sc across, ch 1, turn (16) – 2 rows

R16: 8 sc, stop crocheting here leaving 8 unworked sts, ch 1, turn (8)

Now we’ll just work into the 8 sc sts we crocheted in R16.

R17: dec, 6 sc, ch 1, turn (7)

R18: sc across, ch 1, turn (7)

R19: dec, 5 sc, ch 1, turn (6)

R20: dec, 2 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (4)

R21: [dec] x 2 (2)

Cut yarn and fasten off.

To make the second semi-circle of the heart, attach Colour A Yarn (Berry) to the last sc of R15 (see image below). Using this yarn, repeat R16 to R21. Then cut yarn and fasten off.

Attaching yarn to start crocheting second top semi-circle of heart.

Repeat all steps to make 2nd heart.

Sew in yarn tails of both hearts to hide.

See completed hearts in image below.

Two Crocheted Love Hearts

Love Heart Ornament Assembly Instructions

Hold the two hearts so they are facing each other and all sides are lined up.

Now we’re going to crochet around all sides of both hearts to join them together. St count doesn’t matter here, however st counts can be found in the diagram in the image below.

Insert crochet hook into a st on the right side of both hearts at the top (see image below) and attach Colour B Yarn (Gold).

sc around sides of hearts to join them together. Use 3 sc in one st at the point of the hearts. Stuff heart once you reach half way across, and continue to stuff until you reach the end.

Assembly diagram and starting stitch for joining crocheted love heart ornaments

*When you reach one st away from where you attached the yarn on the heart (see end point in diagram), 1 sc in the next st, ch 20, sc in same st, sl st to 1st st where you started with Colour C Yarn (Gold).

Please note: The loop of the hanging decoration can be made longer or shorter by adding or removing ch sts. Check you are happy with the length of the loop before cutting your yarn.

Cut yarn leaving a yarn tail of approximately 10cm/4″ for sewing.

Sew yarn tail through bottom sts (first & last) of loop to pinch the end of the loop together.

Sew in all yarn tails into the hearts to hide.
