Crochet this sweet Poppy as a symbol of remembrance and hope for a peaceful future.
The poppy has been an international sign of remembrance and a symbol for hope since around the 1920s. I grew up always associating the poppy with Remembrance Day, which also happens to be the same day as my birthday (11th November). Whenever I’m asked when my birthday is and I share the date, I more often than not get the reply, “That’s Remembrance Day!”… a phrase that I’ve heard for around 30-something years now.
I realise not every country observes Remembrance Day, and some call it something else (e.g. Veterans Day / Armistice Day), but I personally like to think of this day as a time to reflect on the parts of the past we don’t want to repeat. For the people who died not only fighting in horrific wars, but for the innocent people that get caught in the cross-fire.
With Remembrance Day approaching very quickly (yes, it’s my birthday tomorrow!), I wanted to make a super simple and free Poppy crochet pattern for you all. It is a flat flower that’s worked in the round and only has two rows with two colours!
This poppy is very quick to crochet and would work well as a brooch (just attach a safety pin to the back), a garland (make multiple poppies and attach them to a ribbon or a long crocheted chain), a hair pin (add a bobby pin to the back and attach it to your hair), or use it simply as it is – as a symbol of remembrance and hope for peace. You could of course also change up the colours of the flower to make a pretty decoration for the home too. Whatever you decide, I can’t wait to see what you choose to do with your crocheted poppy!
So, without further ado, let’s get to this free poppy crochet pattern!
