Top tips and additional crochet pattern information
- Pattern level: Easy
- Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
- Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label. This will stop the stuffing appearing through your stitches.
- Working in rows: This pattern is crocheted back and forth in rows unless otherwise stated.
- Stitch marker: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each row to keep track of the number of stitches.
- Construction: This decoration is made by crocheting two flat pieces. These two pieces are then joined together by crocheting around the sides. The decoration is stuffed as you join the pieces together. This is all explained as you move throughout the pattern.
- Copyright: You are more than welcome to sell your crocheted Frankenstein decoration using this pattern on a small scale. Frankenstein’s Monster Decoration Crochet Pattern
Head (Make 2)
Using Colour A (Green) & B (Black) Yarn.
This piece is worked flat by crocheting back and forth in rows. We start from the bottom of the head and work our way up.
Start with Colour A.
Start: ch 17
R1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook sc in each st across, ch 1, turn (16)
R2 – R20: 16 sc, ch 1, turn (16) – 19 rows
Change to Colour B to crochet the hair.
R21: 16 sc, ch 1, turn (16)
R22: 16 sc, ch 2, turn (16)
R23: 16 hdc, ch 2, turn (16)
R24: 16 hdc (16)
Cut yarn and fasten off.
Now we’ll crochet the ears to either side of the head. Mark either side of R8 and R12 of the head with st markers as shown in the image below to help with this step.
Each st marker will be referred to by ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, or ‘D’ as shown in the image above.
Attach Colour A to point A. In the next round, we’ll crochet up to point B.
Each of the following sts should be crocheted into each consecutive row on the head. For example, crochet the first in R8, the next st in R9, the next in R10 etc.
R25: sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc, ch 1, turn (5)
R26: sc, hdc, 2 dc in next st, hdc, sc (6)
Cut yarn and fasten off.
Attach Colour A to point C and repeat R25 and R26 but this time you’ll crochet in the opposite direction towards point D. This will mean your last st in R25 will be in the side of R8 of the head.
Repeat all steps above to crochet a second Head. Then sew in all yarn tails of both heads.
See two completed Head’s in the image below.
Cheeks (Make 2)
Using Colour C Yarn (Pink).
This piece is worked in rounds.
R1: mc with 6 sc, sl st to first sc in round to join, ch 1 (6)
R2: [inc] x 6 (12)
Cut yarn leaving a longer yarn tail for sewing and fasten off. I recommend using an invisible fasten off.
Repeat steps above to make a second cheek.
Eyes (Make 2)
Using Colour D Yarn (White).
R1: mc with 6 sc, sl st to first sc in round (6)
Cut yarn leaving a longer yarn tail for sewing and fasten off. I recommend using an invisible fasten off.
Repeat steps above to make a second eye.
Using Colour B and a tapestry needle, embroider a little black line over two eye sts. See completed eyes in the image below.
Sewing & Embroidery
Sew cheeks and eyes to one of the heads. Using Colour B and a tapestry needle, embroider stitches across the top of the head, above one eye, and add a little mouth as shown in the image below. The head you choose will be the one that sits at the front of the decoration.
Assembly
Hold the two heads together so the sides of both pieces are aligned. Ensure the head with the cheeks, eyes and embroidery is at the front.
Now we’re going to crochet around the sides of both heads to join them together. St count doesn’t matter here, however st counts can be found in the diagram below if needed.
Insert crochet hook into the left side of R20 of both heads (see image below) and attach Colour A Yarn (Green) with a ch. We will now crochet along the sides of both pieces to join them together.
sc around sides of the Heads to join them together. 2 sc in each corner st (see diagram). Stuff piece when you’ve reached half way, and continue to stuff as you crochet.
Once you reach the other side of R20, change to Colour B (Black) yarn and continue to crochet around the hair.
*When you reach the middle st at the top of the Head (see assembly diagram), 1 sc in this st, ch 20, sc in same st, continue to sc until you reach where you started and sl st to your very first sc.
Please note: The loop of the hanging decoration can be made longer or shorter by adding or removing ch sts. Check you are happy with the length of the loop before cutting your yarn.
Cut yarn and fasten off. Weave any remaining yarn tails into the Head to hide.
