The free crochet pattern for this Christmas Stocking Ornament is surprising easy to make!

The sixth of twelve crochet patterns to be released as part of the Crochet Crew’s Countdown to Christmas is here! You can stay in the loop with all twelve Christmas ornament crochet patterns by following along with the fun here.

I’ll be honest, this is one of my favourite Christmas ornaments so far. Other than just how it looks, I love how the shape is created by crocheting these flat shapes and then crocheting them together with stuffing in between.

If you do end up crocheting this Christmas Gift decoration, I’d love to see photos of your creations! You can share your creations with me by posting a photo to social media, using the hashtag #ChristmasWithCillaCrochets, and by tagging me @cillacrochets.

I’m also here to help if you have any questions at all while crocheting. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me via Facebook, Instagram, or by email. I hope you enjoy the pattern!

Crochet Pattern Information

Materials needed to crochet the Christmas Stocking Ornament

  • DK yarn. I used Rico Ricorumi DK (Colour A & B) and Rico Ricorumi Lamé DK (Colour C) in the following colours. Amounts are in brackets. Please note: If preferred, you can use the same yarn (e.g. Ricorumi DK) for all three yarn colours. Rico Ricorumi Lamé DK is not mandatory for this project.
    • A – Berry (11 grams = 25.5 m/ 28 yds)
    • B – White (3 grams = 7 m/ 7.6 yds)
    • C – Gold (1 grams = 5 m/ 5.5 yds)

Top Tips & Additional Information

  • Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
  • Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label. This will stop the stuffing appearing through your stitches.
  • Working in rows: This pattern is crocheted back and forth in rows unless otherwise stated.
  • Stitch marker: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round to keep track of the number of stitches.
  • Construction: This decoration is made by crocheting two flat pieces. These two pieces are then joined together by crocheting around the sides. The decoration is stuffed as you join the pieces together. This is all explained as you move throughout the pattern.
  • Copyright: You may not copy, reproduce or sell this pattern. However, I’m more than happy for you to sell the makes you’ve created using this pattern on a small scale. For more information, please read the full copyright notice at the bottom of this page.

Let’s Start Crocheting the Stocking Decoration

Christmas Stocking (Make 2)

Using Colour A Yarn (Berry).

This piece is worked flat by crocheting back and forth in rows.

Please note: Turning chs are not counted in the total stitch count.

Start: Ch 21

R1: Start in 2nd ch from hook, 20 sc, ch 1, turn (20)

R2: 19 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (21)

R3: 21 sc, ch 1, turn (21)

R4: 20 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (22)

R5: 22 sc, ch 1, turn (22)

R6: 21 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (23)

R7: 23 sc, ch 1, turn (23)

R8: 22 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (24)

R9: 24 sc, ch 1, turn (24)

R10: 23 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (25)

R11: 12 sc, skip/ignore the remaining sts in R10, ch 1, turn (12)

R12: 12 sc, ch 1, turn (12)

R13: inc, 9 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (12)

R14: 12 sc, ch 1, turn (12)

R15: inc, 9 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (12)

R16: dec, 8 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (10)

R17: dec, 6 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (8)

R18: dec, 4 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (6)

R19: dec, 2 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (4)

Cut yarn and fasten off.

Attach Colour B Yarn (White) to R1 of the shortest flat edge as shown in the image below. Now we’ll be crocheting horizontally in comparison to our previous sts which are now vertical.

R20: 11 sc across, ch 1, turn (11)

R21 – 23: 11 sc, ch 1, turn (11) – 3 rows

R24: 11 sc (11)

Cut yarn and fasten off. Weave in all ends.

Repeat all steps to make a second stocking, however when attaching Colour B Yarn (White) to the second stocking, join to R10 of the short side instead of R1.

See completed stockings in the image below.

Christmas Stocking Ornament Assembly Instructions

Hold the two Stockings together so the sides are aligned.

Now we’re going to crochet around the sides of both Stockings to join them together. St count doesn’t matter here, however st counts can be found in the diagram in the image below if needed.

Insert crochet hook into the st on the longest side of the Stockings just beneath the corner (see image below). Your crochet hook should be inserted into the same st of both Stockings as we will be crocheting along the sides of both pieces to join them together.

Attach Colour C Yarn (Gold) to this st (see image below).

sc around sides of Stockings to join them together. 3 sc in each corner st, except the two ends of the sock where only 2 sc in the corners are required (see diagram). Stuff Stocking when you’ve reached half way, and continue to stuff as you crochet.

*When you reach the st just before the top left corner of the stocking (see end point of assembly diagram), 1 sc in corner st, ch 20, sc in same st in corner, sl st to 1st sc where you started with Colour C Yarn (Gold).

Please note: The loop of the hanging decoration can be made longer or shorter by adding or removing ch sts. Check you are happy with the length of the loop before cutting your yarn.

Cut yarn leaving a yarn tail of approximately 10cm/4″ for sewing.

Sew yarn tail through bottom sts (first & last) of loop to secure.

Weave any remaining yarn tails into Stocking to hide.

Congratulations, you’ve finished!

I hope you’ve enjoyed crocheting your very own Christmas Stocking Ornament!
