Top Tips & Additional Information
- Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
- Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label. This will stop the stuffing appearing through your stitches.
- Working in rows: This pattern is crocheted back and forth in rows unless otherwise stated.
- Stitch marker: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round to keep track of the number of stitches.
- Construction: This decoration is made by crocheting two flat pieces. These two pieces are then joined together by crocheting around the sides. The decoration is stuffed as you join the pieces together. This is all explained as you move throughout the pattern.
- Copyright: You may not copy, reproduce or sell this pattern. However, I’m more than happy for you to sell the makes you’ve created using this pattern on a small scale. For more information, please read the full copyright notice at the bottom of this page.
Let’s Start Crocheting the Cracker Ornament
Christmas Cracker (Make 2)
Using Colour A Yarn (Berry).
This piece is worked flat by crocheting back and forth in rows.
Please note: Turning chs are not counted in the total stitch count.
Start: Ch 9
R1: Start in 2nd ch from hook, 8 sc, ch 1, turn (8)
R2: 8 sc, ch 1, turn (8)
R3: dec, 4 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (6)
R4: 6 sc, ch 1, turn (6)
R5: dec, 2 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (4)
R6: 4 sc, ch 1, turn (4)
R7: [inc] x 4, ch 1, turn (8)
R8 – 23: 8 sc, ch 1, turn (8) – 16 rows
R24: [dec] x 4, ch 1, turn (4)
R25: 4 sc, ch 1, turn (4)
R26: inc, 2 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (6)
R27: 6 sc, ch 1, turn (6)
R28: inc, 4 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (8)
R29: 8 sc, ch 1, turn (8)
In the next row, you’ll crochet sets of 3 sts into each sc from R29.
R30: [sc, hdc, and dc in the same st; dc, hdc, sc in the next st] x 4 (24)
Cut yarn and fasten off.
Attach Colour A Yarn (Berry) to 1st st of starting ch. The slip knot from your starting ch should be right next to the st your crochet hook is in. Repeat R30 across the starting ch.
Cut yarn and fasten off.
Repeat steps above to make a second Christmas Cracker.
Weave in all yarn ends.
See the two completed Christmas Crackers in the image below.
Christmas Cracker Ornament Assembly
Hold the two Christmas Crackers together so the sides of both pieces are aligned.
Now we’re going to crochet around the sides of both Christmas Crackers to join them together. St count doesn’t matter here, however st counts can be found in the diagram in the image below.
Insert crochet hook into the top left corner stitch of both Christmas Crackers (see image below) and attach Colour B Yarn (Gold). We will now be crocheting along the sides of both pieces to join them together.
sc around sides of Christmas Crackers to join them together. 3 sc in each of the four corner sts (see diagram). Stuff Christmas Cracker when you’ve reached half way, and continue to stuff as you crochet.
*When you reach the st just before the top left corner of the Christmas Cracker (see end point of assembly diagram), 1 sc in corner st, ch 20, sc in same st in corner, sl st to 1st sc where you started with Colour C Yarn (Gold).
Please note: The loop of the hanging decoration can be made longer or shorter by adding or removing ch sts. Check you are happy with the length of the loop before cutting your yarn.
Cut yarn leaving a yarn tail of approximately 10cm/4″ for sewing.
Sew yarn tail through bottom sts (first & last) of loop to secure.
Weave any remaining yarn tails into the Christmas Cracker to hide.
Finish by cutting 2 strands of Colour B Yarn (Gold) that are approximately 15cm/6″ long.
Using a needle, thread the first yarn strand in the middle st of R25 so there is a yarn tail on both sides of the st. Tie a double knotted bow. Repeat this step with the second yarn strand but in the middle of R6 instead.
Congratulations, you’ve finished!
I hope you’ve enjoyed crocheting your very own Christmas Cracker Ornament!
