Bernie the Bunny is a crochet amigurumi pattern ideal for intermediate crocheters. She also comes with a little removable halter-neck dress.

Bernie was one of the first ever animal amigurumi crochet patterns I ever designed, and I’ve finally gotten around to re-making her and updating the pattern so it is more consistent with my other crochet patterns (now that I have quite a few amigurumi crochet patterns under my belt). The original crochet pattern had been tried and tested, and this newly updated pattern includes only minor changes (my branding, the crochet pattern format, and clearer photos) and as such it has not been pattern tested again (except by me, of course!).

The biggest change I made to the original pattern was shortening this amigurumi bunny’s ears just a little and I also gave her socks – a cute little addition I thought!

Amigurumi Bunny Crochet Pattern Information

This amigurumi bunny crochet pattern is ideal for intermediate crocheters and is written in US terms in English only.

Bernie the Bunny’s head, body and legs are all worked in one. This means the only sewing that is required is for her arms, ears, dress, pom pom tail, and the little lacey details on her socks and pants.

This sweet amigurumi bunny’s dress is also removable, making her a fun dress-up amigurumi doll for the little ones to play with.

I hope you enjoy making Bernie!

Materials needed

  • DK yarn (see yarn & colour key below)
  • Crochet hook size 2.5 mm (US C/2)
  • Stuffing
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • 3 Stitch markers
  • Safety eyes 8 mm
  • Black embroidery thread
  • Pom pom maker (or something similar)

Yarn Required & Crochet Pattern Colour Key

I used Rico Design Ricorumi DK 100% Cotton yarn to make Bernie the Bunny in the following colours. The yardage required is also indicated in brackets.

  • A – Beige (28 grams = 64.5 m/ 70.5 yds)
  • B – Pink (16 grams = 37 m/ 40.5 yds)
  • C – Spray Red (14 grams = 32.5 m/ 35.5 yds)
  • D – White (Scrap yarn for pom pom)

Gauge

Gauge is not required for this pattern, however for reference my gauge for Bernie the Bunny was as follows:

6 sc stitches on 2.5 cm / 0.98 “

7 rows on 2.5 cm / 0.98 “

Bunny Amigurumi Size

I used the yarn outlined above with a 2.5 mm (US C/2) hook and the amigurumi turned out to be 24 cm / 9.4 ” high (front bottom of feet to top of ears) and 6 cm / 2.3 ” wide (across widest part of the head). Please note: I do tend to crochet quite tightly, so your Bernie the Bunny may turn out larger.

Crochet Pattern Tips for Bernie the Bunny

  • Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
  • Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label. This will stop the stuffing appearing through your stitches.
  • Eyes: In this pattern you have the choice of using safety eyes or embroidered eyes. Instructions are included for both. Please note that safety eyes are a choking hazard and are not suitable for children under 3 years of age.
  • Working in rounds: All parts within this pattern are worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated.
  • Stitch marker: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round/row to keep track of the number of stitches.
  • Stuffing: Unless otherwise stated, stuff all amigurumi parts firmly as you crochet.
  • Decreases: I recommend using invisible decreases for all amigurumi pieces throughout. For pieces that are worked back in forth in rows, use a standard decrease.
  • Changing colour: To ensure straight lines, add the new colour in the last yarn over of the sc before the new colour is needed.

Crochet Pattern for Bernie the Bunny

Before getting started with crocheting this sweet bunny amigurumi, please be aware that her head, body and legs are crocheted all in one go. So you will need to crochet these three sections in the following order:

  1. Head
  2. Body
  3. Legs

Head

Using Colour A Yarn (Beige).

R1: mc with 6 sc (6)

R2: [inc] x 6 (12)

R7: [5 sc, inc] x 6 (42)

R8: [6 sc, inc] x 6 (48)

R9 – 15: sc around (48) – 7 rounds

Insert safety eyes between rounds 12 & 13 with 8 stitches between the eyes. Exact stitches do not matter, as the legs will be placed so they line up properly at a later point.

Finish stuffing head firmly.

R24: [2 sc, inc] x 6 (24)

Change to Colour B Yarn (Pink) and continue to crochet the body. See colour changing note in the tips section above.

Body

Continue crocheting from the head using Colour B Yarn (Pink).

Legs

Continue crocheting from the body using Colour B Yarn (Pink).

To add the legs, split the bottom of the body into three sections using 2 stitch markers. There should be 18 sc on each side, and 4 sc in the middle (2 at the front and two at the back).

How to separate the bunny body with stitch markers so you can start crocheting the legs.
Splitting Bernie the Bunny’s Body to crochet the legs.

For the first round of each leg (R42), your starting point may vary to mine depending on where your last sc is. This will not matter, just note that each leg should be 18 sc around, with 4 stitches (2 on each side) left in the middle at R41. These 4 scs are the middle of the legs & will be sewn together later on.

R42: sc around to first splitting st marker, then sc across to the other side to form the leg, sc back to the beginning (18)

R43 – 47: sc around (18) – 5 rounds

Change to Yarn Colour A (Beige).

R48: BLO sc around (18)

R49 – 55: sc around (18) – 7 rounds

Change to Yarn Colour C (Spray Red).

R56: BLO sc around (18)

R57 – 60: sc around (18) – 4 rounds

R61 – 62: sc around (18) – 2 rounds

Stuff the leg firmly.

R63: [sc, dec] x 6 (12)

R64: [dec] x 6 (6)

Cut yarn leaving a short yarn tail for sewing and fasten off. Use a needle to weave yarn tail through FLO of each sc. Pull tight to close and weave into the leg to hide.

To crochet the second leg, attach Colour B Yarn (Pink) to any stitch on the other side of the splitting stitch markers as shown in image 9. Leave a longer yarn tail before your attached st, as this will be used for sewing.

Repeat R42 – R64 to crochet second leg.

Add extra stuffing between the legs if required. Using a needle and the long yarn tail from the start of leg 2 to sew the 4 sts between the legs together.

Arms (Make 2)

Using Yarn Colour A (Beige).

Do not stuff.

R1: mc with 6 sc (6)

R2: [inc] x 6 (12)

R3 – 17: sc around (12) – 15 rounds

Change to Yarn Colour B (Pink).

R18: BLO sc around (12)

R19 – 24: sc around (12) – 6 rounds

R25: Hold sides of arm together and join with 6 sc (6)

Cut yarn leaving a longer yarn tail for sewing and fasten off. Make 2 arms.

Sew arms to the bunny body. The arms should sit between R25 & R26 of the body with 10 sts in between the arms at the front.

R11: [4 sc, inc] x 3 (18)

R12 – 16: sc around (18) – 5 rounds

R20: [4 sc, dec] x 3 (15)

R21 – 23: sc around (15) – 3 rounds

R24: [3 sc, dec] x 3 (12)

R25: Hold sides of ear together and join both sides with 6 sc (6)

Cut yarn leaving a long yarn tail for sewing. Fold R25 of the ears in half and sew across to create a pinched appearance. Make 2 ears.

Sew completed ears to the bunny head. The ears should sit between R5 & R7 of the head with 15 sts in between each ear at the front of the head.

Pants Lace Detail

Turn the amigurumi bunny upside down so the legs are facing upwards.

Attach Colour B Yarn (Pink) to FLO of a stitch in the centre back of Leg 1 (R47). Your hook should be pointing towards the feet.

R1: ch 3, sk 1, sl st in next sc. – Repeat 9 times around the leg. Your final sl st should be in the sc where you joined the yarn.

Cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends to hide.

Repeat above steps for R47 of Leg 2.

Socks Detail

Turn the bunny upside down so the legs are facing upwards.

Attach Colour B Yarn (Pink) to FLO of a stitch in the centre back of Leg 1 (R55). Your hook should be pointing towards the feet.

R1: ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc in round to join (18) – Ch & sl st is not counted in final st count

Cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends to hide.

Repeat above steps for R55 of Leg 2.

Dress

The dress has three distinct sections when crocheting:

  • Middle
  • Top
  • Skirt

Section 1: Middle of Dress

Using Yarn Colour C (Spray Red).

This section is worked back and forth in rows. Turning chains and slip stitches are not counted in the total st count.

Start: Ch 39, turn

R1: Start in 2nd ch from hook and sc in each st, ch 1, turn (38)

Check your tension at this point. When wrapped around the bunny’s waist tightly the ends of your chain should just touch.

R2: dec, 24 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (36)

R3: dec, 32 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (34)

R4 – 5: 34 sc, ch 1, turn (34) – 2 rounds

R6: 34 sc, ch 6, sl st to first sc in row to join, ch 1 (40)

You will now be crocheting in rounds.

R7: 1 sc in each st, sl st to first sc in round to join (40)

Cut yarn and fasten off.

Get ready to make the top of the dress by turning this section upside down.

Section 2: Top of Dress

Count 15 chains across from the open split of the dress and attach Yarn Colour C (Spray Red) to the 16th Chain.

This section is worked back and forth in rows.

Turning chains are not counted in total st count.

R8: Ch 1, 8 sc, ch 1, turn (8)

R9 – 11: 8 sc, ch 1, turn (8) – 3 rows

R12: 8 sc (8)

Now you will create the halter neck straps and tidy up the top edge of the dress. This is all done in one continuous round, however I’ve written each key step on separate lines to make it easier to keep count.

R14:

  • Ch 26, turn. Start in 2nd ch from hook and sl st in each ch (25) – This is the 1st halter neck strap. See image 21. Only sl sts are counted in total st count.
  • 6 sc down the side of the dress (6)
  • 15 sc along the top until you reach the split in the back of the dress (15) – See image 22
  • ch 6, 6 sc down first side of dress split, 6 sc across the bottom of the dress split, 6 sc up the other side of the dress split, 2 sc in same st at top corner of dress split (20) – see image 23. Chains are not counted in total st count.
  • 15 sc along the other long side of dress (15)
  • 6 sc up side at front of dress (6)
  • Ch 26, turn. Start in 2nd ch from hook and sl st in each ch (25) – This is the 2nd halter neck strap. Only sl sts are counted in total st count.
  • 8 sc across top of dress and sl st to the first ch of halter neck tie 1 (8)

Cut yarn and fasten off. Weave in all yarn ends of dress.

Section 3: Skirt of Dress

Attach Yarn Colour C (Spray Pink) to any st at the back of the skirt at the bottom.

Ch 6, turn, sk 1, 5 sc along the chain

Sl st in next sc at bottom on skirt, Ch 1, Turn.

*FLO sc 5 along the chain, Ch 1, Turn

BLO sc 5 along the chain (back to bottom of dress), Sl st in next sc at the bottom of the skirt, Ch 1, Turn*

Repeat from * to * 37 times.

Leave long tail for sewing and fasten off.

Use yarn tail to sew the skirt together. The chain side should be sewn to BLO of sc side.

Sew in yarn ends.

Attach Yarn Colour B (Pink) to any st at the back of the skirt at the bottom.

Ch 1 and sc around the bottom of the entire skirt. St count does not matter here, but for reference I used 79 scs.

Dress Button

Use Yarn Colour B (Pink).

R1: mc with 6 sc (6)

R2: 6 sc (6)

Cut yarn leaving a longer yarn tail for sewing and fasten off.

Using a needle, weave through FLO of R2 sts and pull tight to close.

Sew button between R1 & 2 of dress split.

Crocheted amigurumi dress with button and halter-neck ties. Made in red spotted yarn.
Bernie’s completed halter-neck dress

Pom Pom Tail

Using a Pom Pom maker (or whatever you like to use to make pom poms) with Yarn Colour D (White), make a pom pom for the tail.

Cut the pom pom down to size so it measures approximately 2.5cm in width and height.

Sew the tail in between the middle two stitches of R37 & R38 at the back of the body.

Amigurumi bunny face embroidery

Embroidery

Using black embroidery thread, embroider two eye lashes next to each of the eyes. Both eyelashes start in the middle of the outer edge of the eye. One should be horizontal and is 2nd st across. The other eyelash is on a diagonal and ends in the st directly above where the horizontal eyelash ends.

Embroider a nose and a mouth on your Bernie. The nose is 2 sts wide and sits between R13 & 14 of Bernie’s head between the eyes. The mouth starts in the middle of the nose and runs vertically down by 1 st.

Dress up Bernie

Now it’s time to put Bernie in her dress. Simply slip the dress over Bernie’s feet and pull it up. The little latch and button on the back of the dress should sit right above the pom pom tail. The halter neck straps should be tied behind Bernie’s neck.
