Face scrubbies are a fantastic summer crochet project and they’re also great if you’re trying to put some leftover yarn to use. I’ve wanted to make some for ages, and last weekend I did using Sarah Stearns free crochet pattern! That’s what inspired me to write this blog post.
If you’re anything like me, unless I’m designing patterns, I rely on written crochet patterns no matter how simple the projects are. But I have to admit, there are a plethora of crochet face scrubby patterns available online. So, how do you know which one to choose?
That’s where this blog post will help.
I’ve gone and tested ten free crochet patterns for face scrubbies, just so I can share the results with you. You’ll discover where you can find each of these free patterns online, my personal opinions on each, the level of difficulty, tips, and of course how each of them turned out.

#1 Reusable Cotton Crochet Face Scrubbies by Sarah Stearns
This was the first pattern that got me hooked on making face scrubbies, and I discovered it by a simple Google search. I was so hooked, I ended up making three sets – 12 in total, some of which are pictured below.
The pattern was very easy to follow, however I did find it challenging at the beginning trying to crochet puff stitches in the round. This was mainly because I normally crochet quite tightly since I’m used to making amigurumi. If you have the same problem, either go up a hook size or just loosen your tension a wee bit. I promise if you keep practising, you’ll get there in the end!
Another top tip is to weave in your magic circle tail after you complete Round 2, and also leave a long enough yarn tail after fastening off to weave through your entire final round. That way you can tighten the circle slightly so your puff stitches are even more prominent. This was just my personal preference, but you can also keep the scrubbies relatively flat if you prefer by not weaving all the way around and tightening.

#2 Easy Face Scrubbies by AMY RAMNARINE
This pattern was very easy to follow, although I wasn’t great at actually crocheting it. I think this was due to my tension again. I crocheted two versions, one very tightly, and the other very loosely, and neither turned out perfect.
As you can see, the first looks very compact and curved inwards, and the second doesn’t sit flat at all. While I couldn’t get this one quite right, I certainly don’t think that is due to the pattern itself. If you don’t naturally crochet very tightly, I have no doubt if you decide to use this pattern, you’ll have a much better result than me. You’ll be able to see from the pattern itself that the combination of stitches does look great when you get it right, and it’s quite nice having a different variation of stitches in a face scrubby. Just don’t let my bad fortune turn you off.

#3 Free Crochet Pattern Face Scrubbies from Rito Yarn & Hobby
This is a super simple face scrubby crochet pattern to follow. Online it has both text and photo instructions, plus you can download a PDF version of the pattern for free. The pattern is written in UK terms, so be careful if you normally use crochet patterns written in US terms. Just as a wee reminder Double Crochet in US terms is the same as Treble Crochet in UK terms, and Single Crochet in US terms is the same as Double Crochet in UK terms.
This face scrubby crochet pattern uses a much thinner yarn and hook compared to the previous two patterns. The scrubby sits completely flat when finished, and doesn’t have any complicated stitches. It may be because of the yarn I used (Natura Just Cotton), however this seems less soft for a face scrubby, although the final result is pretty.
If you decide to use this pattern, my one tip is to be careful of your tension. If you crochet too tightly, you will find that the face scrubby will fold up at the sides slightly.

#4 Free Pattern: Cotton Face Scrubbies by Lauren from Daisy Cottage Designs
If you’re not a fan of magic circles or puff stitches, this face scrubby crochet pattern is for you. This pattern has neither, and it also brings us back to worsted weight yarn with a 5mm crochet hook.
In comparison to the three crochet scrubbies above, this is the largest yet. One of my recommendations is to weave in your starting yarn tail to close the middle gap once you’ve completely finished crocheting. My scrubby looked massive when I finished, but weaving in that yarn tail really worked to close the middle gap and the face scrubby actually stayed flat!
It actually sits the flattest out of all the face scrubbies I made. And even without the puff stitches, it feels very squishy and soft. A fantastic easy crochet face scrubby pattern all round!

#5 DIY Crochet Face Scrubbies by The Jessica Life: Domestic Bliss Squad
Okay, now this crochet face scrubby is the biggest of all ten featured in this blog post. It is gigantic! However, it is super simple and quick to crochet and does feel and look quite luxurious. That also may be due to the natural yarn colour I chose.
You could also try making this with a thinner yarn and a smaller crochet hook, which would make it smaller, although I think this would significantly reduce the squishiness factor too. It’s a wee bit too big for my personal taste, but in saying that it works perfectly as a larger scrubby.

#6 Easy Crochet Face Scrubbies, Floral Scrubbies by Shehnaaz from Crochet Dreamz
This is super cute and easy crochet pattern that would be great for youngsters or anyone who really loves flowers. This pattern uses a 5.5mm crochet hook and worsted weight yarn, yet it is a smaller sized face scrubby similar to pattern one and two in this list.#
It ticks the boxes of feeling soft and squishy, and it also comes with a pattern for a little basket to store your collection of face scrubbies in. I didn’t test the basket, but if the scrubby pattern is anything to go by, I’m sure it’s grand. My one tip is to be careful with your stitch count on this one, because if anything goes wrong your petals won’t line up how they should.

#7 Crocheted Cotton Face Scrubbies by 5 Little Monsters
This face scrubby is definitely the squishiest of the ten with its collection of puff stitches throughout. It uses a 5.5mm crochet hook, worsted weight yarn, and again if you’re not a fan of those pesky magic circles there isn’t one in this pattern.
The pattern also let’s you choose from two size options. I made the larger one, which I think turned out looking very pretty and practical.

#8 Crochet Face Scrubbies by Craftholics Anonymous
This face scrubby crochet pattern works up super fast, and is very simple to follow. It does however introduce Bobble stitches instead of Puff stitches that are used in many of the face scrubby patterns in this post. Don’t let this scare you off though, Puff stitches and Bobble stitches are similar, and the Bobbles in this pattern are quick and simple, plus they provide the extra squish factor.
Overall, this is a great face scrubby pattern that introduces you to Bobble stitches and looks neat once complete. If you haven’t ever crocheted Puff or Bobble stitches before, this is a great starting point.

#9 Crochet Flower Face Cleansing Pads by Petals to Picots
Now we’re getting fancy! This crochet face scrubby pattern is a little time consuming and fiddly, but the final result looks fantastic. With only using basic stitches, it is also suitable for beginner crocheters.
I really enjoyed making this one for the final flower effect. However, there are a couple of downsides. Firstly, only one side of the face scrubby is really usable, the other side is plain and feels a little rough. I also imagine it will be a little harder to clean with the ‘grooves’ between each flower petal. Lastly, if you prefer minimal sewing this pattern probably isn’t the best for you, as it does require you to finish off and then reattach yarn to continue crocheting. In saying all of this however, the final result really does look wonderful. So if you are looking for a face scrubby with the wow factor, this pattern has you covered.

#10 Scrubby Confections by Claudia Lowman
This face scrubby pattern was one I found on Ravelry, and it is a lot of fun. The pattern is a free download which takes you to a Google doc – great for anyone wanting to print the pattern or just view it online without ads. Two yarn colours are needed for this pattern, and it is a little more time consuming than all of the other face scrubbies listed here. But if you are looking for a face scrubby that’s creative and bright, this will be right up your alley.
Now, again there are a couple of minor downsides. Only one side looks ‘pretty’, however both sides would be usable as a face scrubby. The crochet pattern also requires you to do quite a bit of sewing and weaving in ends compared to other patterns on this list. The pattern did however teach me a new stitch – Tambour Chain Crochet – which is not difficult, but looks super effective. Plus, the scrubby is squishy and looks super cute. So if you’re a fan of the fancy, don’t let the sewing turn you off. It is worth it.
