Crochet this squishy Aussie animal using the free koala crochet pattern.

This free koala crochet pattern makes one adorably squishy amigurumi koala! After recently turning my original intermediate platypus crochet pattern (Phyllis the Platypus) into a quick, easy and cuddly Platypus crochet pattern, I knew I just had to do the same for my original Kira the Koala crochet pattern.

So here it is – the quick, easy and cuddly version of Kira – this is Kim the Koala’s free crochet pattern.

Top tips and additional crochet pattern information

  • Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
  • Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label. This will stop the stuffing appearing through your stitches.
  • Eyes: In this pattern you have the choice of using safety eyes or embroidered eyes. Please note that safety eyes are a choking hazard and are not suitable for children under 3 years of age. You can find a simple eye embroidery tutorial on my blog here if this is your chosen method.
  • Working in rounds: All parts within this pattern are worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated.
  • Stitch marker: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round/row to keep track of the number of stitches.
  • Stuffing: Unless otherwise stated, stuff all amigurumi parts firmly as you crochet.
  • Decreases: I recommend using invisible decreases for all amigurumi pieces throughout.
  • Optional cotton DK yarn: Chenille yarn has a tendency to shed. To avoid shedding during assembly, try using a cotton DK yarn to sew your chenille amigurumi pieces together. You won’t see the cotton yarn when finished and it will ensure the pieces are sewn firmly in place.
  • Copyright: You are more than welcome to sell your crocheted Kim the Koala amigurumi using this pattern on a small scale. Sew in short yarn tail from starting chain to hide. The end yarn tail will be used for assembly.

Assemble Kim the Koala

Follow the steps below to assemble your crocheted Kim the Koala. Remember you can use a DK cotton yarn or similar as an alternative to the chenille yarn tails to sew amigurumi parts together. This will help minimise the shedding of the chenille yarn, however this is completely optional.

Step one: Sew inner ears to outer ears

Place the inner ear at the bottom and in the middle of the outer ear. The inner ear will sit over R6 – R10 of the ear. Use the long yarn tail from the inner ear to sew the inner ear to the outer ear. Ensure you are only sewing the inner ear to one side of the outer ear (the back stitching should be inside the outer ear piece). Repeat this assembly step for both ear pieces so you have to completed ears.

Step two: Sew ears to head

Pin ears to either side of the head in preparation for sewing. The top of the ears sit between R5 & R6 of the head with approximately 14 sts between the top of the ears at the front of the head. The bottom of the ears sit between R12 & R13 of the head with 20 sts in between the bottom of the ears at the front. Sew ears into place by sewing R10 of the ear to the head using the yarn tails from the outer ears. Don’t forget to keep the inner ears facing forward.

Step three: Sew nose to head

Using the yarn tail from the nose, sew the nose to R10-R15 of the head in the middle of the eyes.

Step four: Sew body to head

Using the yarn tail from the body, sew body to R20-21 of the head.

Step five: Sew arms to body

Using yarn tail from the arms, sew arms to between R19-20 of the body on either side. There are approximately 8 sts between the arms at the front of the body.

Step six: Sew legs to body

Using yarn tail from the legs, sew legs to between R6-R7 of the body at the front. There are approximately 2 sts in between the legs at the front of the body.
