Top Tips & Additional Information
- Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
- Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label. This will stop the stuffing appearing through your stitches.
- Working in rows: This pattern is crocheted back and forth in rows unless otherwise stated.
- Stitch marker: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round to keep track of the number of stitches.
- Construction: This decoration is made by crocheting two flat pieces. These two pieces are then joined together by crocheting around the sides. The decoration is stuffed as you join the pieces together. This is all explained as you move throughout the pattern.
- Copyright: You may not copy, reproduce or sell this pattern. However, I’m more than happy for you to sell the makes you’ve created using this pattern on a small scale. For more information, please read the full copyright notice at the bottom of this page.
Let’s Start Crocheting the Winter Hat Decoration
Winter Hat (Make 2)
Using Colour A Yarn (White).
This piece is worked flat by crocheting back and forth in rows. We start from the bottom of the hat and work our way up.
Please note: Turning chs are not counted in the total stitch count.
Start: Ch 5
R1: Start in 2nd ch from hook and 12 sc along ch, ch 1, turn (12)
R2: 12 sc (12)
Cut yarn and fasten off. Turn piece around horizontally as though you were continue to crochet.
Attach Colour B Yarn (Berry) to BLO of last sc in R2 and continue to crochet.
R3: BLO 12 sc, ch 1, turn (12) – Image below shows R3 before the ch 1, turn.
R4 – 6: 12 sc, ch 1, turn (12) – 3 rows
R7: dec, 8 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (10)
R8 – 9: 10 sc, ch 1, turn (10) – 2 rows
R10: dec, 6 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (8)
R11: 8 sc, ch 1, turn (8)
R12: dec, 4 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (6)
R13: dec, 2 sc, dec, ch 1, turn (4)
R14: [dec] x 2, ch 1, turn (2)

Cut yarn and fasten off.
Attach Colour A Yarn (White) to top st in R13 and continue crocheting back and forth in rows.
R16: inc, ch 1, turn (2)
R17: [inc] x 2, ch 1, turn (4)
R18: [dec] x 2, ch 1, turn (2)
R19: dec (1)
Cut yarn and fasten off.
Repeat all steps above to make a second Winter Hat. See two completed Winter Hat pieces in the image below.
Winter Hat Christmas Ornament Assembly
Line up the two Winter Hats with the right sides facing outwards (that’s the side with the first row of Yarn B in the BLO sts).
Now we’re going to crochet around the sides of both Winter Hats to join them together. St count doesn’t matter here, however st counts can be found in the diagram below if needed.
Insert crochet hook into the st on the left side of the small ball at the top of the hat (see diagram). Your crochet hook should be inserted into a st in the same place on both Winter Hats as shown in image below. This is how we will join the Winter Hats together (by crocheting along the sides of both pieces).
Attach Colour C Yarn (Gold) to this st.
sc around sides of Winter Hats to join them together. 3 sc in the two corner sts (see diagram). Stuff Winter Hat when you’ve reached half way, and continue to stuff as you crochet.
*When you complete the last 3 sc in the right hand corner of the white piece (see end point of assembly diagram), 1 sc in middle st, ch 20, sc in same middle st, sl st to 1st sc where you started with Colour C Yarn (Gold).
Please note: The loop of the hanging decoration can be made longer or shorter by adding or removing ch sts. Check you are happy with the length of the loop before cutting your yarn.
Cut yarn leaving a yarn tail of approximately 10cm/4″ for sewing. Sew yarn tail through bottom sts (first & last) of loop to secure.
Weave any remaining yarn tails into Winter Hat to hide.
Congratulations, you’ve finished!
I hope you’ve enjoyed crocheting your very own Winter Hat Christmas Ornament!
