Bianca the Black Cat is a free amigurumi pattern ideal for the Halloween season.

Two months ago now (I can’t believe how quickly time has flown by), my partner and I welcomed a new family member (aka a kitten) into our home. So this Halloween, I just had to design a crochet pattern that was kitty cat related. As such, Bianca the Black Cat was created and I’m delighted to share the amigurumi pattern with you for free.

The crochet pattern is ideal for intermediate crocheters and is written in US terms.

While the pattern is available directly here on my blog, if you’d like to avoid the ads, you can also download the PDF version of the pattern from my Etsy or Ravelry stores.

If you decide to crochet Bianca, I’d absolutely love to see your makes. You can share them with me by posting on social media using the hashtag #CrochetBiancaTheBlackCat and by tagging me @cillacrochets. Happy crocheting!

Bianca the Black Cat Crochet Pattern Information

Materials Needed

  • Worsted weight yarn. I used Rico Design Creative Cotton Aran in the following colours. Amounts used are in brackets.
    • Black (50 grams = 85 m/ 93 yds)
    • Purple (45 grams = 76 m/ 83 yds)
    • Green (8 grams = 14 m/ 15 yds)
    • Pink (4 grams = 6.8 m/ 7.5 yds)
    • White (4 grams = 6.8 m / 7.5 yds)
  • Crochet hook size 3.5 mm (E)
  • Stuffing
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Stitch marker
  • Safety eyes 10 mm (Optional)

Amigurumi Size

I used the yarn above with a 3.5 mm (E) hook and Bianca turned out to be 31 cm / 12.2 ” high from the bottom of her feet to the top of her hat.

Please note: I do tend to crochet quite tightly, so your Bianca may turn out larger.

Gauge

Gauge is not required for this pattern, however for reference my gauge was as follows:

11 sc stitches on 5 cm / 1.96 “

12 rows on 5 cm / 1.96 “

Amigurumi Pattern Abbreviations

sk – Skip

FLO – Front loop only

Top Tips & Additional Information

  • Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you. You can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
  • Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label. This will stop the stuffing appearing through your stitches.
  • Eyes: As an alternative to safety eyes, you can embroider or crochet the eyes. There is a crocheted eye photo tutorial included within the PDF pattern. Please note that safety eyes are a choking hazard and are not suitable for children under 3 years of age.
  • Working in rounds: All parts within this pattern are worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated.
  • Stitch marker: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round to keep track of the number of stitches.
  • Stuffing: Unless otherwise stated, stuff all amigurumi parts firmly as you crochet.
  • Decreases: I recommend using invisible decreases throughout.
  • Invisible finish/fasten off: For the hat rim, I recommend using an invisible finish. A photo tutorial is included within the PDF pattern.
  • Copyright: You may not copy, reproduce or sell this pattern. However, I’m more than happy for you to sell the makes you’ve created using this pattern on a small scale. For more information, please read the full copyright notice at the bottom of this page.

Assembly Steps: Black Cat Amigurumi Pattern

Step 1: Sew mouth to head

Sew mouth to the middle of the head. The top of the mouth sits between R13 &14 of the head. The bottom of the mouth sits between R21 & R22. Fill mouth with stuffing when you have sewn half way across.

Step 2: Sew ears to head

Sew the ears to either side of the head. Each ear should curve inwards with the top of the ear sitting between R4 & 5 and the bottom of each ear between R9 & 10 of the head. There should be approximately 6 sts between the top of each ear at the front of the head.

Step 3: Sew body to head

Sew body between R23 & R24 of the head. When lining up the body to the head, ensure the chain gap in the skirt of the dress is central to the back of the head.

Step 4: Sew tail to body

Pin tail to the body between R9 & R11. The tail should curve upwards. Check the positioning of your tail to ensure it fits neatly through the gap in the skirt. Once you’re happy with the positioning, sew tail to body.

Step 5: Sew legs to body

Sew legs between R3 & R6 of the body. The legs should be slightly towards the front of the body (not centred with the starting magic circle).

Step 6: Sew arms to body

Sew arms between R21 & R22 of the body with approximately 6 sts between the front of the arms.

Step 7: Sew witch hat to head

Lightly stuff witch hat if desired (optional). The hat should sit in the middle of the head just behind the ears. Sew BLO R22 sts of the hat to the head.

Step 8: Embroider nose and mouth

Use Colour D (Pink) Yarn to embroider a nose and one line for the mouth.
